Emotional, Behavioral & Aggression Issues
Unlike many people with autism Andrew has no difficulty expressing (or feeling) emotion. I have often wondered if he is not dealing with some bipolar or manic issues as well. He is often very emotional (both happy and sad). He loves to express his affection for people with hugs.
Andrew has a real problem with self injurious behaviors (SIBs) ... slapping himself very hard (his legs can be covered with bruises). kicking his feet into walls & chairs etc.
Andrew can become physically aggressive towards others.
Often these behaviors seem to result from his inability to functionally express his frustration and anger. Often they grow out anxiety (and medications have greatly helped this issue). Sometimes they seem compulsively driven by an unexplainable inner source.
